A few days ago a sad message from Michael Sobott informed me of the death of Armin Hofmann.
Armin was a unique character; He was not only very active in his little Nagold, but so overarching that his label X-Mist Records, founded in the early 80s, had become a fundamental reference point for the entire European HC punk scene within a few years.
After the usual exchange of letters we met in person in 1984. It was 22 December and he had organised a concert with Kina, the Dutch Frites Modern and the Swiss band Pax Helvetia.
After that we met again often: sometimes in Germany, sometimes in Italy.
For X-Mist Records, Kina had released the 7" Biko/Chicago in 1992 and the LP "Talk to me again" the following year. Our labels had traded tons of records and Armin had organised several concerts for us.
About ten years ago he returned to the Aosta Valley with Ute and we went on a mountain tour, I showed him Aosta from above; clear skies, spectacular panorama.
Armin as always extremely friendly and with that face that inspires sympathy and trust.
His death left me speechless.
I looked for photos of Armin ... the ones of Aosta were destroyed along with the mobile phone I had taken them with. Then I found an envelope with photos from the concert on 22 December 1984; He's not there, we're just playing.
I searched and searched again, it seemed impossible, nothing to find .... then here occured a photo, taken in Homburg in November 1986 at the Kina/Government Issue concert ... and there he is in the audience, on the left edge, Near him is Sunny, lead singer of the Skeezicks, and on the far right, in the shadow also Gianpiero.
Armin looks towards the lens (Karin "Hamster" Hagemann should be behind the camera), it almost seems as if he has realised that he has been tricked. A look that is almost like a greeting between two friends. While looking at it closely, I really like this photo ... an incredible photo!

Qualche giorno fa un triste messaggio di Michael Sobott mi informava della morte di Armin Hofmann. Armin era un personaggio unico; attivissimo non solo nella sua piccola Nagold, tanto che la sua etichetta X-Mist Records nata all'inizio degli '80 in pochi anni era diventata un punto di riferimento fondamentale per tutta la scena punk HC europea. Dopo il consueto scambio di lettere ci eravamo conosciuti personalmente nel 1984. Era il 22 dicembre e aveva organizzato un concerto con Kina, gli olandesi Frites Modern e gli svizzeri Pax Helvetia.
In seguito ci eravamo rivisti sovente: un po' in Germania, un po' in Italia.
Per X-Mist Records i Kina avevano fatto uscire nel 1992 il 7" Biko/Chicago e l'anno successivo l'LP Parlami ancora. Le nostre etichette si erano scambiate tonnellate di dischi e Armin aveva organizzato diversi concerti per noi.
Una decina di anni fa è tornato in Valle d'Aosta assieme a Ute ed eravamo andati a fare un giro in montagna, gli avevo fatto vedere Aosta dall'alto; cielo terso, panorama spettacolare.
Armin come sempre estremamente gentile e con quel viso che ispirava simpatia e fiducia.
La sua morte mi ha lasciato senza parole.
Ho cercato qualche foto di Armin ... quelle di Aosta sono andate distrutte assieme al cellulare con cui le avevo fatte. Poi ho scovato una busta con le foto del concerto del 22 dicembre '84; lui non c'è, ci siamo solo noi che suoniamo.
Ho cercato e ho cercato ancora, mi sembrava impossibile non trovare nulla .... poi ecco sbucare una foto fatta a Homburg nel novembre 1986 al concerto Kina/Government Issue ... ed eccolo lì tra il pubblico, sul bordo a sinistra, vicino a lui c'è Sunny, cantante degli Skeezicks e tutto a destra, nell'ombra c'è anche Gianpiero.
Armin guarda verso l'obbiettivo (dietro la macchina fotografica dovrebbe esserci Karin "Hamster" Hagemann), sembra quasi che si sia accorto di essere stato inquadrato. Uno sguardo che è quasi un saluto tra due amici.
Ora che la guardo con attenzione mi piace moltissimo questa foto ... una foto incredibile!

Vor einigen Tagen informierte mich eine traurige Nachricht von Michael Sobott über den Tod von Armin Hofmann.
Armin war ein einzigartiger Charakter; Er war nicht nur in seinem kleinen Nagold sehr aktiv, sondern so übergreifend, dass sein Anfang der 80er Jahre gegründetes Label X-Mist Records innerhalb weniger Jahre zu einem grundlegenden Bezugspunkt für die gesamte europäische HC-Punk-Szene geworden war.
Nach dem üblichen Briefwechsel trafen wir uns 1984 persönlich. Es war der 22. Dezember und er hatte ein Konzert mit Kina, den niederländischen Frites Modern und der Schweizer Band Pax Helvetia organisiert.
Danach trafen wir uns oft wieder: Mal in Deutschland, Mal in Italien.
Für X-Mist Records hatte Kina 1992 die 7" Biko/Chicago und im darauffolgenden Jahr die LP "Talk to me again" veröffentlicht. Unsere Labels hatten tonnenweise Platten getauscht und Armin hatte mehrere Konzerte für uns organisiert.
Vor etwa zehn Jahren kehrte er zusammen mit Ute ins Aostatal zurück und wir machten eine Bergtour, ich zeigte ihm Aosta von oben; klarer Himmel, spektakuläres Panorama.
Armin wie immer äußerst freundlich und mit diesem Gesicht, das Sympathie und Vertrauen erweckt.
Sein Tod machte mich sprachlos.
Ich suchte nach Fotos von Armin ... die von Aosta wurden zusammen mit dem Handy, mit dem ich sie aufgenommen hatte, zerstört. Dann fand ich einen Umschlag mit Fotos vom Konzert am 22. Dezember 1984; Er ist nicht da, wir spielen nur.
Ich suchte und suchte erneut, es schien unmöglich, nichts zu finden .... dann kommt hier ein Foto, aufgenommen in Homburg im November 1986 beim Kina/Government Issue-Konzert ... und da ist er im Publikum, am linken Rand, In seiner Nähe ist Sunny, Leadsänger der Skeezicks, und ganz rechts, im Schatten auch Gianpiero.
Armin schaut in Richtung der Linse (Karin „Hamster“ Hagemann sollte hinter der Kamera sein), es scheint fast so, als hätte er gemerkt, dass er hereingelegt wurde. Ein Blick, der fast wie eine Begrüßung zwischen zwei Freunden ist.
Jetzt, wo ich es genau betrachte, gefällt mir dieses Foto wirklich ... ein unglaubliches Foto!
